Solids and 3D printing

Why a shape does or does not print.

What "closed" means

A shape prints when every edge is shared by exactly two faces. Then there is a definite inside and a definite outside, and a slicer knows which part to fill. One missing face, or one edge with three faces on it, and it has to guess - and guesses come out as holes, blobs, or nothing at all.

Finding out

  1. Export STL. It says closed and ready to slice, or that a slicer will have to guess.
  2. If it is open, /holes draws every edge that nothing meets in red, over the model - so you can see where it is open rather than only that it is. It checks what you have selected, or every solid if nothing is.
  3. Fix it and run /holes again. No red, and it is shut.
One edge erased from a closed box opens it, and /holes then draws every unmatched edge in red all around the opening.
One edge off a closed box and it is not closed any more. /holes draws every edge that nothing meets in red, so you can see where the hole is - here, all around the opening the two missing faces left.

The usual causes

Where it lands on the bed

STL and OpenSCAD exports do the centering for you, so there is nothing to move in the slicer.
